What is Mold?

Mold (sometimes referred to as mildew) is a microorganism that has been classified as a fungus. It can thrive on almost any surface. Mold reproduces very quickly. It can impact, your health and your wallet. The sooner you identify and remediate, the less risk you have.

It is only when certain types of molds get into our homes that issues arise. Though there are thousands of different mold types, only certain kinds are dangerous for humans. Mold spores easily become airborne and once inhaled, they can have major impacts on our health.

What Makes Mold Grow?

The existence or growth of a mold depends on the conditions of their environment. Mold enjoys warm, dark, and damp places. Factors that can contribute to mold growth in your home or business include

  • Temperature– Mold thrives in warm temperatures, ranging anywhere from 40 F to 100 F.
  • Moisture – Molds require moisture to grow.
  • Lack of Ultraviolet & Synthetic Light – Since mold does not photosynthesize, it has no use for light.

Is Mold Toxic?

A mold is considered toxic or poisonous if it has negative health effects leading up to death. The toxins infiltrate in three ways: ingestion, inhalation or contact. Though there are thousands of different mold types, only certain kinds are dangerous for humans. Mold spores easily become airborne and once inhaled, they can have major impacts on our health. Health issues range from recurring allergies to severe reactions ending in death. While not all molds are considered deathly toxic, all indoor mold growth is potentially harmful and should be removed promptly, no matter what types of molds are present or whether they can produce toxins.
